TODAY THE WORLD IS TURNING
EVER FASTER

Flow, flux and constant renewal is it what gives any entity or organization the ability to last over time and change and development are the core for driving forward.

This fact determines life and society as well as business and economics.

Therefore it becomes increasingly important to reflect Heraclitus’ doctrine of Panta Rhei. ”Dynaxity” is the overarching term which transfers this antiquely thought to present.

DYNAXITY – EXPLAINING TODAYS’ ENVIRONMENT WITH A NEW RESEARCH METHOD

  • “Dynaxity”, as an artificial word composed by dynamics and complexity, was created in the late 1980’s and firstly published by Prof. Dr. Heijo Rieckmann, professor at the economic faculty of the University of Klagenfurt, in 1991.
  • The term emerged from today’s challenges of managing complex systems in fast changing environments with increased dynamics and complexity as key drivers and the resulting consequences for perception, diagnosis and control of these systems.
  • Rieckmann bases his theory on the fact that everything is coalescing: Networks of energy, communication, finance and commerce move cultures, states, religions and institutions together, creating a global village where everything reacts with each other. Alongside with this increase in complexity, the world faces new dynamics in the private and professional life: Everything is moving faster and time becomes scarcer.
  • These developments accelerate, influence and determine themselves mutually, creating an atmosphere where predictability and control becomes increasingly difficult.

EVIDENCE CAN BE SEEN EVERYWHERE

  • Product lifecycles are getting shorter while the diversity of products is increasing, having an influence not only on the consumer market but as well on functions like SCM and procurement.
  • New markets arise and bring old ones to obsolescence mostly determined by technological disruption and upcoming mega trends.
  • Globalization gives new possibilities to extend customer and market reach but at the same time poses threats as the crash of few market participants can result in the collapse of whole systems.

COMPANIES HAVE TO ANTICIPATE AND REACT WITH INCREASING SPEED AND FLEXIBILITY

  • Flexibility is the top priority in our turbulent environment. International competition and permanent disruption through new technologies and innovations characterizes todays’ reality.
  • Fast pace and ever more changing requirements result in an increasing difficulty to manage the organization.
  • Controllability can still be given but requires a shift away from classic structures.
  • The establishment of network structures instead of steep hierarchies, that enable employees to have personal responsibility and partially autonomous decision making is recommended.

DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES

  • The present shows that many companies are still not able to address the challenges of increasingly fast changing environments and fail with their Business Models, Strategies and Operating Models.
  • New disruptive innovations occur permanently, creating new markets, companies and possibilities but drive dated ones to obsolescence. These developments can be seen in many cases.
  • At IPG, we are continuously focusing on these challenges! Follow our ideas to get engaged with our work and approach to build dynamic capabilities and to deal with Dynaxity!
